Tropical Haematology Research Unit (THRU) is a young and vibrant research group at the College of Medicine specializing in high quality malaria and anemia research in children and pregnant women. The unit is currently conducting three studies on Malaria and anaemia in children, risk of malaria in children who are HIV-exposed and on cotrimoxazole prophylaxis and a clinical trial on the efficacy of a new antimalarial drug for intermittent preventive therapy in pregnancy (IPTp).
THRU is urgently seeking a suitably qualified, highly motivated and hardworking candidate to fill the vacant position of laboratory technician tenable at the research unit at Zomba Central hospital. Residence in Zomba is an added advantage. Appointments will be made on a fixed term basis for 1 year, which may be renewed depending on performance and availability of funds.

Job Summary: To perform all study(s) related laboratory experiments according to study protocols.
Duties and responsibility
Duties a shall include but not limited to the following
- Assist in the development of standard operating procedures (SOPs)
- Carry out all laboratory tests in accordance with research protocols and SOPs.
- Be aware of, and work using the Quality Control protocols, both internal and external where appropriate
- Perform all external and internal quality control procedures.
- Perform all study laboratory procedures whilst confirming to the good clinical laboratory practice
- Keep both paper and electronic copies where appropriate
- Prepare stores specimen according to set protocol
- Monitor equipment at regular intervals according to set protocols where appropriate
- Keep all bench surfaces and equipment clean in all areas (except floors and hand basins which are cleaned by housekeepers)
- Be responsible for the handling of laboratory spillages according to the spillage SOP.
- Check stocks and report stock levels to the appropriate member of staff.
- Work within the health and safety protocols of the unit
Qualifications
- Diploma in Laboratory Technology from a recognized institution.
- At least 2 years’ experience in a busy hospital
- Experience of working in a busy medical research laboratory will be an added advantage
- Those with GCP or GCLP certificate will have an added advantage
- Registered with the Medical Council of Malawi
- Computer literacy
- Be willing to relocate to Zomba
