Trainee Broadcast Technical Operator, Sound

BBC Wales Studios and Outside Broadcasts aims to deliver a high quality service to production teams, providing the most creative output at the best value for money. The team works across BBC Cymru Wales programme areas, including the soap opera Pobol Y Cwm, Sport and News and Current Affairs including both Welsh Language productions for S4C and English Language productions for BBC Cymru Wales.

Role Responsibility

This is a training opportunity for the role of Broadcast Technical Operator with a specific emphasis on responsibilities of an Audio Assistant. The training will be mainly in an operational environment, working with experienced operational staff with particular emphasis on training for duties as a pole/boom Operator. Your main responsibilities will include ensuring that recording acquires the best sound quality whilst working within the constraints imposed by camera framing and other craft teams.  As the Broadcast Technical Operator, you will source and obtain suitable sound equipment, rectifying sound faults when necessary.

The Ideal Candidate

You will have a natural interest in sound recording technology and programme production. You will have a solid educational background, educated to A level standard or equivalent ideally within a related subject. Due to your previous experience and educational history, you will have gained a basic understanding of electronics and recording equipment.  As the Broadcast Technical Operator, it is important that you are able to communicate effectively with your team members, taking initiative when tasked with solving problems. It is desirable that you are able to follow Welsh scripted dialogue, however this isn’t essential for the position.
