The Global Health Fellows Program II (GHFP-II) is a five year cooperative agreement implemented and managed by the Public Health Institute in partnership with CDC Development Solutions and Management Systems International. GHFP-II is supported by the US Agency for International Development (USAID).
GHFP-II’s goal is to improve the effectiveness of USAID health programs by addressing the Agency’s immediate and emerging human capacity needs. The program seeks to accomplish this goal first through the recruitment, placement and support of diverse health professionals at the junior, mid and senior levels. These program participants include fellows, interns, corporate volunteers and Foreign Service National professionals. The program then provides substantial performance management and career development support to participants, including annual working planning assistance, and ensures that professional development opportunities are available.
Looking to the future, GHFP-II also seeks to establish a pool of highly-qualified global health professionals that will ensure the Agency’s ongoing technical leadership and effectiveness. This objective is supported by an extensive outreach program that brings global health opportunities and specialized career advice to a diverse range of interested individuals, with a particular focus on those underrepresented in the field of global health.
INTRODUCTION:
The Youth Program Strengthening Intern will be assigned to the Service Delivery Improvement (SDI) Division of the Bureau for Global Health’s, Office of Population and Reproductive Health (PRH). The PRH Office provides technical leadership, strategic direction, implementation oversight, support to field missions, partner coordination, and performance tracking for the family planning component of the United States Government’s (USG) Global Health Initiative. The SDI Division develops and applies innovative strategies that improve the performance of individuals, organizations, and systems for the sustainable delivery of quality family planning services. A technical priority for the PRH Office is meeting the reproductive health and family planning needs of adolescents and youth by integrating youth into global projects as well as building the capacity of staff and partners to implement effective youth programming approaches.
In collaboration with the Bureau for Global Health’s Office of Professional Development and Management Support (PDMS), the Youth Advisor is developing several online “e-learning” courses to address different aspects of youth health programming. These courses will be developed in collaboration with USAID partners including Georgetown University’s Institute for Reproductive Health, CEDPA, and Save the Children, using a standardized format. In 2013, SDI and PDMS plan to develop and launch a new online course on Meeting the Needs of Very Young Adolescents. It is expected that the Intern will complete one e-learning course, and as time allows, a brief on a topic to be determined. The Intern will participate in and contribute to activities carried out by the SDI Division, with the SDI Youth Advisor serving as his/her onsite manager and with work on the e-learning course serving as the primary objective.
