Health Alliance International (HAI) is an independent 501(c)3 non-profit organization that also functions as a center for the University of Washington’s (UW) Department of Global Health. Because of its 501(c)3 status, HAI is able to receive funding directly from donors such as the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation, USAID, NIH, UNICEF, CDC and others. HAI works to support Ministries of Health in our partner countries, including Mozambique, Côte d’Ivoire and Timor-Leste.
HAI currently has an outstanding opportunity for a Research Advisor based in Beira, Mozambique. This position is eligible for standard HAI staff benefits. The Research Advisor will be based out of the Beira Operations Research Center (CIOB), which is an applied research arm of the Mozambican National Institute of Health (INS).
Job Description: The Research Adviser will be responsible for providing technical support for activities at the Beira Operations Research Center (CIOB), ensuring that activities are aligned with research objectives and priorities for the National Health System in the central region of Mozambique. The position in funded through a number of research grants, including from the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation (DDCF)/HAI, WHO/TB-REACH, and the NIH/NICHD.
Responsibilities:
• Build and strengthen local capacity in the implementation of health systems research;
• Mentor and provide technical support for CIOB researchers;
• Participate in the design and implementation of research projects, quality control and data analysis;
• Apply for international and national research opportunities/grants for CIOB;
• Assist in the organization and training in applied research, including MPH-level courses;
• Write and disseminate final study reports in collaboration with the Executive Director of CIOB and other Ministry of Health (MOH) and HAI counterparts;
• Ensure that all activities are in line with national ethical (IRB) procedures;
• Supervise HAI-Mozambique staff based at the CIOB;
• Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications and Experience:
• PhD or MPH in Epidemiology, Biostatistics, Public Health or other related area;
• Minimum three (3) years’ experience in health research, including proposal development, data collection, data analysis, and publication;
• Demonstrated expertise in data management, analysis, and presentation: advanced proficiency in common database and statistics programs including STATA, SPSS, EpiInfo, and Microsoft Access;
• Experience in questionnaire design and implementation;
• Experience and knowledge of the Mozambican National Health System;
• Ability to work collaboratively with Mozambican National Health System staff and partner organizations;
• Strong organizational, planning and management skills;
• Ability to prioritize and work under pressure;
• Proficiency in Portuguese and English;
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office;
• Available to travel within the central region of Mozambique.
