We’re looking for a qualified Intellectual Property lawyer with a minimum of 2 years relevant PQE to join our team, based in London. This is a Six month contract/attachment opportunity to cover maternity leave.
Our team provides comprehensive IP law advice across all parts of the BBC Group relating to trade marks, copyright, patents, know-how and domain names. We also advise on contractual disputes relating to rights issues. The BBC Legal Division is responsible for developing and implementing the BBC's legal strategy and for providing legal advice to the BBC. The Division is made up of the following departments: General Counsel's Office, IP Legal, Editorial Legal (comprising Media Litigation and Programme Legal Advice), Commercial, Employment, Property, Fair Trading Regulatory and Future Media Legal departments.
Role Responsibility
Acting as a lawyer within the Intellectual Property team, you’ll work closely with BBC Research & Development and to the wider BBC and subsidiary companies, advising on a variety of matters such as: patents; copyright; trade marks; database rights; design rights; and know-how rights. Whilst this role involves predominantly non-contentious work, you will also undertake contentious work in relation to claims of patent infringement.
The Ideal Candidate
To be successful in this role, you will need specialist knowledge of all aspects of UK IP law and some knowledge of European and international IP law, combined with a focus on technology related IP law. You will need experience of drafting agreements, licences and assignments and managing patent portfolios, technology issues and patent disputes. In addition, you’ll have strong analytical skills and be a good communicator, with experience of building relationships across a range of people and within a team. You'll have excellent written and oral communication skills and experience of advising clients directly, in person, on the telephone and in writing. Knowledge of the structure, objectives and values of the BBC and Broadcasting issues generally is highly desirable. A familiarity with a variety of online public and proprietary legal databases (eg UK Patent Office website, PLC, Lexis Nexis, Saegis etc) and experience of undertaking legal research is essential.
