Partners in Health (PIH) is a non-profit organisation based in Boston, Massachusetts, USA, whose mission is to provide a preferential option for the poor in health care.  Through service delivery, training, advocacy and research, PIH works globally to bring the benefits of modern science to those in need and to serve as an antidote to repair, PIH has programs in Haiti, Peru, Guatemala, Mexico, Russia, Rwanda, Lesotho, Malawi, Burundi, Kazakhstan, the Dominican Republic and Boston

PIH began working in Malawi in 2007 where today we serve a catchment area of 125,000 through 11 health centers and 2 hospitals in partnership with our sister organisations,  Abwenzi Pa Za Umoyo (APZU) is in Neno District and we seek to recruit suitably qualified and experience candidates for the following positions tenable at Neno Boma

Construction Officer

Reporting to Infrastructure Manager , Upper Neno, Malawi Prepare with the foreman the electrical and plumbing works executed by PIH employees, Prepare regular construction project progress reports, with progress updates, pictures, budget and payment information, As needed, assist with tasks related to hospital and facilities maintenance, Help prepare payments to contractors, Provide daily progress report to supervisor, Work with infrastructure manager, physician, community members and administrators to plan, design, budget and carry out minor construction projects, Scrutinise BOQ bids from contractors and negotiate fair prices, Supervise construction progress and quality in the form of frequent site visits, of both major and minor construction projects in the Neno district, Communicate closely with contactor foreman, clerk of works, quantity surveyor and office staff to ensure projects stay on schedule, coordinating with the foreman the electrical and
 plumbing works executed by PIH employees.

A Diploma in Construction, Minimum of 5-10 yrs of construction management experience, Excellent communication and personal organisation skills, Proficiency in computer skills (Word, Excel, Email), Experience in quantity surveying, Strong math skills, Strong work ethic and ability to work independently with strong individual initiative, Willingness and ability to learn new skills as related to construction, Ability to respond to frequently shifting needs with flexibility in a complex environment, Ability to respond to feedback as related to position responsibilities

Electrician , Reports to Infrastructure Manager, Location Upper Neno, Malawi

Carry out electrical repairs at all PIH/APZU hospitals, health centres and staff housing buildings, Carry out a preventative, planned maintenance program and undertake routine inspections of buildings, fixtures, and electrical installations to assess for required repairs, Assist biomedical technician in troubleshooting medical and other facilities equipment, Perform electrical installations (chasing wall, underground, pipe, wire, lights, fans, etc) on renovations and new construction, Perform assessments of sites and create detailed materials lists, Provide daily progress report to manager and infrastructure clerk, Be responsible for any materials and tools that belong to APZU Infrastructure dept, Working in a team or independently, Minimum Grade II electrical qualification, Grade I preferable, 2-5 yrs of relevant experience, Excellent communication and personal organisation skills, Strong work ethic and good attitude, Experience in a hospital setting
 preferred, Ability to work independently with strong individual initiative, Willingness and ability to learn new skills as related to facilities maintenance and construction, Excellent interpersonal skills, including respect for others and being attentive toward others’ needs, Ability to respond to frequently shifting needs with flexibility in a complex environment, Ability to respond to feedback as related to position responsibilities

Plumber
Reports to Infrastructure Manager, Upper Neno, Malawi

Carry out plumbing repairs at all PIZ/APZU hospitals, health centers and staff housing buildings, Carry out a preventative, planned maintenance program and undertake routine inspections of buildings, fixtures and plumbing installations to assess for required repairs, Perform plumbing installations )chasing wall, underground drainage pipe, septic tank, water pipe, sinks, toilets etc) on renovations and new construction, Perform assessments of sites and create detailed materials lists, Provide daily progress report to manager and infrastructure clerk, Be responsible for any materials and tools that belong to APZU Infrastructure dept, Working in a team or independently

Minimum Grade II Plumbing qualification, Grade I preferable, 2-6 yrs of relevant experience, preferably construction and maintenance, Excellent communication and personal  organisation skills, Strong work ethic and good attitude, Experience in a hospital setting preferred, Ability to work independently with strong individual initiative, Willingness and ability to learn new skills as related to facilities maintenance and construction, Excellent interpersonal skills, including respect for others and being attentive toward others’ needs, Ability to respond to frequently shifting needs with flexibility in a complex environment, Ability to respond to feedback as related to position responsibilities
