Chief Speech Writer

The Foreign & Commonwealth Office (FCO) promotes the United Kingdom’s interests overseas, supporting our citizens and businesses around the globe.  We are responsible for safeguarding the UK’s national security, building prosperity by increasing exports and investment and supporting British nationals through modern and efficient consular services.  The FCO has operations in over 170 countries, continually presenting diverse and complex challenges.
It is essential that the United Kingdom has a clear and effective voice on the world stage and that our views and policies are presented and clearly understood.  One means of communicating these are through the speeches of Ministers.  These are a vital tool in leading public debate (both domestic and foreign), influencing other countries, and presenting the UK’s position on world events on subject matter as diverse as international terrorism, climate change, Europe and defence.
As Chief Speech Writer you will be expected to deliver a range of speech products, remarks and articles for Ministers, in conjunction with officials and advisers – often under very tight deadlines.
You are already an accomplished speech writer, with a track record of producing creative and impactful product for very senior stakeholders.   Experience of politics is advantageous but not essential.  Ideally you already have an interest in international current affairs and the UK’s position on key issues.  You are a natural self-starter but are also collegiate, and will fit with our friendly Private Office team. You will be able to build an understanding and rapport with Ministerial teams in order to be quickly effective in this role. This is a truly unique career opportunity that will be demanding and challenging, but always stimulating.
