The Abdul Latif Jameel Poverty Action Lab (J-PAL) seeks a qualified applicant for the position of Research Associate for a project entitled “Using Cultural Ceremonies to Reduce Intimate Partner Violence and HIV Transmission”. The project will evaluate an educational intervention delivered in the context of the culturally accepted coffee ceremony in southern Ethiopia designed to address the interlinked challenges of gender-based violence and HIV transmission. The project is being executed in collaboration with EngenderHealth, the Addis Ababa University and the Ethiopian Public Health Association, which will be the host organization and the formal employer in Ethiopia. The position offers an opportunity to gain first-hand field management experience in an organization undertaking cutting-edge development research. This position will be based in Butajira, in Gurague Zone in SNNNP; this is approximately 100 kilometers south of the capital Addis Ababa.
Research associates work closely with academic researchers and other field staff to perform a variety tasks including, but not limited to, the following:
1. Intervention implementation
- Working in conjunction with EngenderHealth to manage training of intervention facilitators.
- Monitor the ongoing implementation of the intervention; ensure adherence to randomization.
- Manage field supervisors and other intervention managers, and communicate regularly to PIs as well as EngenderHealth about challenges encountered.
2. Communication activities
- Maintaining regular communication between PIs and program development team.
- Meeting current and potential donors during their visits to Ethiopia.
- Participating in meetings with Ministry of Health and any other government officials, local stakeholders and other Ethiopia-based NGOs.
3. Data collection
- The research associate will have primary responsibility for implementation of baseline survey and ensuing continuous data collection. This includes:
0 Recruiting and training data collection staff
0 Supervising data collection and ensuring adequate data quality.
0 Assisting in development of databases and software for data collection.
0 Assisting in cleaning and tabulation of data collected in the field.
Desired Qualifications and Experience
- Bachelors or Masters degree in economics, social sciences, public policy, public health, or related fields.
- Experience managing program implementation or field research in health or development economics in a developing country.
- Excellent management and organizational skills along with strong quantitative skills.
- Fluency and excellent communication skills in English.
- Flexible, self-motivating, able to manage multiple tasks efficiently, and team player.
- Demonstrated ability to manage high-level relationships with partner organizations.
- Knowledge of Stata (strongly preferred) or other data analysis software is preferred.
- Familiarity with randomized controlled trials preferred.
- Prior experience in Ethiopia or East Africa preferred.
We are looking for a commitment period of at least one year.
Salary Range: 1,000-2,000 USD per month depending on qualifications and experience.
