Public Health Specialist with Expertise in Health Financing or Health

The Swiss Centre for International Health of the Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute carries out consultancy, project management, training and applied research work in international health. 

We are seeking for a position in Basel, Switzerland:

Public health specialist with expertise in health financing or health economics

We aim at identifying a midlevel candidate with a strong interest and proven experience on health systems and public health, especially health financing / health economics in low and middle income countries (LMIC).


The successful candidate is expected to contribute to:
•    Developing our expertise in health systems strengthening, health economics and health financing
•    Carrying out activities in the following areas: support of health insurance structures in developing countries, conducting economic analysis studies; working on health financing concepts, all with special focus on low- and middle income countries (LMIC);
•    Carrying out activities in the area of health systems strengthening including implementation research
•    Strengthening our policy advice capacities in health systems strengthening including  health financing and improvement of financial access to health services;
•    Identifying, attracting and collaborating in competitive bids for projects in the above mentioned areas.


The position will be placed within the Health Economics and Financing Group (HEFG) of the Health System Support Unit of the SCIH (Swiss TPH). To best fit into our active, interdisciplinary team we ask for the following requirements:
•    You hold a Master degree in bio-medical or a social science discipline with relevant knowledge on economics, health financing, micro-insurance or similar. A postgraduate training in public health is an asset.
•    You have at least 5 years of experience in health systems strengthening especially health financing related to developing countries.
•    You have sound knowledge in the application of economic methodology and a proven experience in economic evaluation.
•    You have an excellent command of English and, ideally, of German or French.
•    You are willing and available to frequently travel to LMIC countries.
•    A high level of commitment and flexibility, good communication skills, strong spirit of team work, capacity to take initiative and ability to work with professionals in multi-cultural contexts are asked from our team members.


An initial contract of two years will be offered. An extension is desirable, depending on a performance evaluation. 

Only candidates fulfilling the above mentioned criteria will be considered. Given Swiss labour laws, preference has to be given to candidates from the European Union and Switzerland. Shortlisted candidates will be interviewed by phone and those passing to the next round will be invited for a personal interview in Basel.

We are aiming at having the successful candidate starting work as soon as possible.
