Agricultural Production Systems Director, Malawi
We are currently seeking a long-term Agricultural Production Systems Director for an upcoming USAID-funded Agriculture Diversification for Incomes and Nutrition activity in Malawi. The project will increase the competitiveness of high-value, nutrient-rich value chains through support for agricultural enterprises and increased access to markets and finance. The targeted value chains are groundnut, soy, and orange-fleshed sweet potato. With domestic, regional, and international demand for these value chains growing, there are opportunities for smallholder farmers to diversify and increase their incomes, and for agricultural small and medium enterprises (SMEs) to develop and grow. The development of the targeted value chains also explicitly integrates nutrition and is expected to improve nutritional outcomes for targeted populations
Responsibilities:
- Develop the capacity of producers Malawi to identify and respond to domestic, regional and international business opportunities in target value chains.
- Facilitate the development of inclusive supply chains linking producers to value added markets in Malawi and the region.
- Pilot and scale-up commercially viable agricultural service delivery and extension models.
- Oversee all agronomic training and dissemination of new practices and technologies including conservation farming protocols, GAP and post-harvest handling practices.
- Inform the development and uptake of production finance tools.
Qualifications:
- M.S., M.B.A., or other post-graduate degree in agronomy, agribusiness, business administration or other relevant field.
- Minimum of 10 years of relevant and progressive work experience in developing countries, in the area of agronomy, agribusiness, and/or agricultural trade and investment.
- Proven knowledge of production and agribusiness systems in Malawi
- Excellent communication skills for a wide audience of stakeholders.
- Fluent English skills required.
