Background
The Global Government business unit delivers the full array of Inmarsat services to government and defence customers across the globe. Today many of the world’s military satcom users rely on Inmarsat as a primary means of communication, from naval ships at sea to soldiers on deployed operations. The breadth of Inmarsat’s government market extends beyond the military user to all different departments of government, delivering services to security agencies, emergency services, border security organisations, etc.
The Global Government business unit generates over $120M revenue for Inmarsat. With a challenging growth target to be reached by 2016 the business unit aims to penetrate deeper into the wider government verticals and across a greater number of geographic regions than it does currently. To achieve this we are investing in a range of new products and services, and reviewing price plans. The Offer Development division is charged with delivering these new products to the wider business unit in response to market needs and is also responsible for the placement and promotion of the product set, supporting the sales organisation and many events and conferences around the world.
Primary purpose of the position
This role is an opportunity that will suit an engineering graduate who enjoys inventing new ways to solve problems using skills.
As a member of the Global Government Offer Development team unit the intern’s primary responsibility will be to support the Solutions Architect whose role is to conceive and create solutions, experiment and optimise configurations for new products or new technologies that are being considered for use. In particular the Intern will be expected to conceive and develop small applications for Smart devices and other platforms that enhance the user experience when using the products and services being developed.
In addition the intern will have a range of duties supporting efficient administration of the department.
Key responsibilities of the position
The Global Government Intern will contribute to the following areas of work:
- Assisting with defining services, products or solutions to meet government users capability needs
- Learning how communications equipment operates and evaluating its performance operating within or alongside Inmarsat’s satellite networks
- Developing equipment configurations to optimise performance
- Developing ‘Apps’ to support and / or enhance the way products can be used by end users (this might be as experimental / concept demonstrators for formal development, or could be Apps we choose to release, depending on the nature of the App and the competence of the Intern
- Assist in the development of presentation material for internal and external meetings
- Compile meeting reports and develop actions plans for follow up activities
- Assist the sales and solutions engineering functions of the business unit with support to customer related activities
- Manage the pool of demonstration equipment, ensuring serviceable equipment is in the right place, at the right time to support customer demonstrations, events and conferences
- Administer a number of internal tools (e.g. Wiki) and processes used by Offer Development
Essential knowledge and skills
- Graduate or equivalent with a significant, proven research or experimentation component
- Experience in developing Apps on any of the major OS / platforms
- Analytical and methodical approach to work
- Excellent communications skills, both oral and written
- Good knowledge of English language
- Highly motivated self-starter who is able to use their own initiative
- Ability to work with some degree of autonomy, using their own initiative to contribute to the business
- Team player
Desirable knowledge and skills
- University degree or equivalent in satellite communications, network engineering, or computing
- Fluent in more than one language
Sphere of influence of the position
Work in close contact with other members of the Global Government business unit, the corporate Products and Services department, 3rd party technology providers and channel partners.
Additional information
- The post is based at Inmarsat’s headquarters in London. The incumbent may be required to travel when necessary. All business travel expenses will be covered
