Northern Mozambique Channel Initiative Leader

The Northern Mozambique Channel Initiative (NMCI) Leader’s main task will be to coordinate WWF’s efforts in facilitating the development of an ecologically and politically informed vision and strategy for this transboundary initiative, catalyzing broad political and institutional support, and stimulating private and public sector engagement in the Initiative.

Major Responsibilities:

Coordination of WWF’s efforts

• Lead the WWF NMC Core Team in the technical and financial planning, implementation and monitoring of the WWF Initiative workplans.
• Ensure liaison with the relevant Network offices and programmes involved in the NMC region.
• Ensure synergy and alignment between WWF’s interventions and investments in the NMCI so that they effectively contribute to the above mission.
• Ensure regular communications of NMCI progress to WWF stakeholders.
• Lead in the organization of regular meetings (face to face or virtual) of the NMC Enabling Team in order to ensure sound internal coordination.
• Supervise the management and implementation of any NMCI related project contracted under WWF MWIOPO (including technical, financial supervision) and any staff hired under such projects.
• Oversee the management and implementation of NMCI related projects carried out by other WWF offices in the region in order to ensure alignment, to the NMCI strategy and effective integration in the workplans and M&E plans.
• Lead WWF’s intervention in the Comoros by identifying strategic priorities, potential for strategic partnerships and collaboration that will lead to the achievement of the NMCI.
• Represent WWF in all NMC related fora, meetings as needed and in coordination with other WWF stakeholders.
• Work closely with the WWF-International Manager, Habitat Conservation and Regional Initiatives to ensure WWF’s integrated ocean management strategic priorities are adequately addressed in all phases of the NMCI development.

Facilitation of the development and implementation of the NMCI vision and strategy

• Work closely with the NMCI Strategic Advisor in the development of a global framework that sets out the NMC vision, objectives, and political/institutional/private sector engagement strategy.
• Provide input and advice on studies and assessments undertaken as part of the scoping phase of NMCI.
• Ensure an effective communication plan is implemented to share the NMC vision and strategy.
• Take part in fundraising initiatives in line with the NMC vision and strategy.


Catalysing of political, institutional and financial support for NMCI

• Lead a team work to engage stakeholders working on the marine and coastal environment in and around NMC in an integrated marine ocean management vision.
• Lead a team work to influence key investments impacting the NMC area (e.g. oil & gas, maritime transports, etc.) in such a way as to be environmentally and socially sound and contributing to the sustainable development of owner countries.
• Lead a team work to strategically influence key NMC countries to integrate principles of integrated ocean management and governance in their policy and legal frameworks.
• Lead a team work to catalyse the development of regional frameworks and mechanisms to support sustainable and integrated management of oceans and coasts in the NMC.
• Lead a team work to enable key civil society organizations and private sector to engage meaningfully in decisions related to the NMC area.
