VACANCY ANNOUNCEMENT: DESK OFFICER, NGO FORUMS ASSOCIATION
The African Union, established as a unique Pan African continental body, is charged with spearheading Africa's rapid integration and sustainable development by promoting unity, solidarity, cohesion and cooperation among the peoples of Africa and African States as well as developing a new partnership worldwide. Its Headquarters is located in Addis Ababa, capital city of Ethiopia.
In seeking to achieve these objectives, the African Union intends to strengthen its capacity to deliver by, among others, the implementation of new organization structure and the filling of vacant posts.
The Commission of the African Union invites applications from citizens of Member States for the position of Desk Officer, NGO Forums Association in the Directorate of CIDO.
1. Post:
Job Title: Desk Officer, NGO Forums Association
Grade: P2
Supervisor: Head, Civil Society Division
Duty Station: Addis Ababa, Ethiopia
2. MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Under the direct supervision of the Head, Civil Society Division and ultimately, the Director of CIDO, he/she will be responsible for the following:
  1. Serve as a focal point for all matters related to Political Parties, CSO groups and associations, Pan African Clubs and Associations;
  2. Coordinate inputs of civil society groups in this area and monitor and analyze political, military and Socio-Economic development related to these processes;
  3. Assist the process of ECOSOCC linkages with the AU Commission, governance and development agencies in Africa and counterpart agencies in Africa and counterpart agencies of ECOSOCC in other regional bodies;
  4. Support implementation of related sectorial clusters of ECOSOCC;
  5. Assist in implementation of related action plans and programs and activities of the Directorate;
  6. Prepare reports, speaking notes, briefs, draft decisions and resolutions and assist in the preparation and organization of meetings, conferences and consultation with partners;
  7. Write letters, document speeches and other correspondences as required by the supervisor on crucial and sensitive issues of concern to the supervisor and Director;
  8. Assist with basic research, monitoring and following-up of decisions;
  9. Perform other duties as assigned by the Director or other supervisors as designated;
4. EDUCATIONAL QUALIFICATIONS:
Candidates must have a University Bachelor Degree in Science, Political Science, International Relations, Law, Sociology or other relevant fields. A higher qualification will be an added advantage.
5. WORK EXPERIENCE:
Candidate must have a minimum of five (5) years of post-qualification experience in national, regional or international organizations, with special emphasis on policy analysis and civil society matters and concerns.
6. OTHER RELEVANT SKILLS:
Be computer literate; Be able to work under pressure, particularly as a professional civil servant in a multicultural environment; Demonstrate professionalism and ability to undertake studies and analytical skills associated with good decision-making; Good communication and interpersonal skills.
7. LANGUAGE REQUIREMENT:
Proficiency in one of the African Union working languages. Proficiency of one or several other working language(s) would be an added advantage.
8. TENURE OF APPOINTMENT:
The appointment will be made on fixed term contract for a period of three (3) years, of which the first twelve months shall be considered as a probationary period. Thereafter, the contract will be for a period of two years renewable, subject to satisfactory performance and deliverables.
9. LEAST REPRESENTATIVE COUNTRIES:
Candidates from the following least represented countries are encouraged to apply: Eretria, Eritrea, Central African Republic, Cape Verde, Comoros, Congo (DRC), Djibouti, Equatorial Guinea, Liberia, Mauritania, Namibia, Sahrawi Arab Republic, SaoTome and Principe, Seychelles and Somalia.

11. REMUNERATION:
Indicative basic salary of US$ 29,287.00 per annum plus other related entitlements e.g. Post adjustment (46% of basic salary), Housing allowance US$ 14,414.40 per annum), education allowance (75% of tuition and other education related expenses for every eligible dependent up to a maximum of US$7,800.00 per child per annum), etc for internationally recruited staff of the Commission.
