The context
Malawi aims to provide high-quality basic education for all children. Although the school enrolment rate has increased in recent years, assessments of learning achievements show that the quality of lessons has not kept pace with the increase in quantity. The high rates of children who have to repeat school years or who drop out is a further indication of problems in the quality of education. The two-year teaching training is still in need of improvement, as are the teaching materials and the curricula for primary education and teacher training. Improvements in teacher management would usefully supplement efforts to improve the quality of school education.
Your role
Advising the Ministry on improving the quality of education, focusing especially on teacher training and teacher management; improving material and curriculum development; enhancing the efficiency, quality and relevance of in-service teacher training courses; building the organisational and subject specific instruction capacity of the teaching training institutes.
Your profile
You have completed a university degree in administrative, social or educational science or in a comparable discipline and are familiar with the approaches used by German development cooperation. Ideally, you have already had several years of experience working in the field of (inter)national education administration, education research and education cooperation. You are comfortable working on the topics of teacher training, material and curriculum development, education quality and education policy. You have had several years of leadership experience, including experience in managing international teams.
You are confident in business German and English.
