Organizational Setting and Reporting
The United Nations Human Settlements Programme, UN-Habitat, is the agency for human settlements. It is mandated by the UN General Assembly to promote socially and environmentally sustainable towns and cities with the goal of providing adequate shelter for all.
The UN-Habitat City Planning, Extension and Design Unit / UPDB and Regional Office for Africa (ROAf) is for 6 months.
The Internship is UNPAID and full-time.
Interns work five days per week (35 - 40 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned.
Responsibilities
Daily responsibilities will depend on the individual's background; the intern's assigned office as well as the internship period.
General:
The intern will work under the direct supervision of the Technical Advisor (TA) in Kigali, Rwanda and will assist in the development of a guide for a planning methodology for secondary cities in Rwanda. The Government of Rwanda (GoR) wants to increase the number of people living in urban areas from 18% now to 35% by 2020. In order to reach this target, the GoR appointed six intermediate cities to be poles of growth ('secondary cities'). The TA and local counterparts developed a programme that should improve the current planning methodology in such a manner it supports the pull in Rwanda to secondary cities, it supports sustainable urban development and rapid growth. This programme – Planning Studio – consists out of workshops that each discusses one specific urban theme. The Intern will be involved in the execution of the Planning Studio and specifically in:
The development of a guide containing output from the workshop (an improved planning methodology). After every workshop we will develop a chapter of the guide, containing the results for the specific theme in relation to the secondary cities and a general methodology that is also applicable to other intermediate cities in Rwanda;
The development preparation of documents, preparation of presentations and other dissemination materials to support workshops;
The support to prepare Planned City Extensions in two secondary cities in Rwanda.
Specific Duties:
Assist in the development of a planning methodology guide, based upon outcomes of 6 specific workshops;
Develop and organize material form the workshops with a strong emphasize on drawing, writing and sketching to support the methodology and designing the guide;
Support the organization of a meeting/workshop to present the results and commence the next steps;
Other duties as assigned by the supervisor.

Education
Applicants must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements:
a. Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);
b. Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent);
c. Have graduated with a university degree and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one-year period of graduation.
Be computer literate in standard software applications.
Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter.
Have a demonstrated the ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.
Studies in Urban or Town Planning or Architecture (Master candidate preferable).
Work Experience
Applicants are not required to have professional work experience for participation in the programme.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the internship, fluency in oral and written English and French required. Knowledge of another official UN language is desirable.
