The internship is located in the Geneva office of the United Nations Mine Action Service (UNMAS) within the Office of Rule of Law and Security Institutions (OROLSI) of the Department of Peacekeeping Operations (DPKO).
UNMAS was created to save lives, and addresses unsecured and poorly-managed stockpiles of weapons and ammunition, improvised explosive devices, dangerous storage depots, unexploded ordnance, landmines and cluster munitions. The Geneva office acts, inter alia, as its humanitarian hub by maintaining a triangular relationship with New York Headquarters and operations in the field.

Org. Setting and Reporting
An internship with the United Nations Secretariat, depending on the needs of the Office, is normally granted for an initial period of three months with an opportunity for extension - not exceeding a combined period of six months. The internship is unpaid and full-time, with the expectation that the intern works five days per week - Monday through Friday - 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. (40 hours).

Responsibilities
Duties of the intern include, but are not limited to:
- Conduct research and draft official documents related to priorities of UNMAS
- Support the work of the Inter-Agency Working Group on Mine Action
- Support the office’s engagement with the humanitarian community
- Assist on treaty-related matters, including the Anti-Personnel Mine Ban Convention, the Convention on Cluster Munitions, and the Convention on Certain Conventional Weapons
- Attend conferences and meetings of interest to UNMAS, and provide verbal and written briefing notes to colleagues
- Conduct specific research on current developments related to mine action and beyond
- Contribute to the team’s day-to-day tasks as needed, including administration and communications matters

Education
- Applicants must be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); or be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent); or have graduated with a university degree and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one-year period of graduation;
- Be computer literate in standard software applications;
- Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter; and
- Have demonstrated the ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.
Work Experience
Applicants are not required to have professional work experience for participation in the internship programme.
Languages
Fluency in English (both oral and written) is required; knowledge of French is desirable. Knowledge of another UN official language is an advantage.
