SUMMARY:
Counterpart International is currently seeking a WASH (Water, Hygiene and Sanitation) Specialist to manage the WASH related components for an anticipated five-year USAID/ Feed the Future Ag Diversification for Incomes and Nutrition project in Malawi. The five-year project will improve the nutritional status of women and children under five, and build the capacity of Malawian CSOs engaged in agriculture, nutrition, and WASH activities. The proposed project seeks to reduce poverty and stunting in eight districts of Central and Southern Malawi through inclusive sustainable growth in the agriculture sector and improved agriculture and nutrition behavior change interventions in rural communities. The WASH Specialist will be responsible for providing leadership of all sanitation and hygiene strategies, and will advise partner organizations on WASH activity implementation. The WASH Specialist will develop materials and tools to ensure the technical strategies are carried out in all programming. This is a full time position based in a to be determined city in Malawi. This position will report to the Component Manager, Nutrition.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Develop tailored sanitation and hygiene strategies and marketing approaches for the Malawian context.
• Monitor technical quality of deliverables associated with sustained water and sanitation services and adoption of key hygiene behaviors.
• Support in planning and implementation of sanitation and hygiene promotion activities at the district level.
• Advise partner organizations on all technical aspects of WASH activity implementation.
• Provide technical assistance to develop and implement Social and Behavior Change Communication strategies and materials for WASH, including design, media outreach, production, and community mobilization and evaluation, in coordination with the project team.
• Develop relevant materials and tools to ensure the technical strategies are reflected accurately.
• Ensure that all materials and tools are in line with the overall project strategy regarding WASH and Social and Behavior Change Communication.
• Effectively engage local government partners, local leaders and communities to ensure responsive programming and buy-in.
Requirements• A Bachelor’s degree in Public Health, Water and Sanitation, Environmental Science, or Environmental Engineering is required.
• Minimum of five years of relevant experience working directly with WASH, Nutrition and/or agriculture in Malawi or similar context.
• Experience working with the Ministry of Health; the Ministry of Industry and Trade; the Ministry of Agriculture, Irrigation, and Water Development; and the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, as well as international agencies; and non-governmental organizations.
• Ability to work well in a team environment, able to work effectively with CSOs, USAID, project staff, and other beneficiaries.
• Demonstrated leadership, as well as supervisory, organizational and training skills.
• A high level of interpersonal and communication skills.
• Professional level speaking, reading, and writing in English.
• Demonstrated commitment to gender integration and social inclusion.
• Excellent reporting and technical writing skills
Preferred:
• Master’s degree in Public Health, Water and Sanitation, Environmental Science, or Environmental Engineering.
• Demonstrated knowledge of USAID regulations, policies, procedures and/or Feed the Future initiatives.
• Fluency in Chichewa
