Disney Africa - Retail Director (Sales Director)

The Walt Disney Company Africa is seeking a Retail Director (Sales Director with Marketing experience), based in either CT or Jhb, to lead retail strategy & growth in South Africa and beyond. This senior role reports into the GM & leads a team of 12. Disney offers great CEO-type career growth via exposure to multiple categories, global interaction, marketing, retailer relationships & Africa market development.

The day-to-day activities of the role require: 
  • Setting the retail strategy & vision for both South Africa & selected African markets
  • Leading & inspiring a team of staff in both CT and Jhb
  • Establishing & maintaining retailer & licensee relationships
  • Presenting & conveying Disney's strategies & promotions to stakeholders
  • Setting budgets; managing P&L drivers to optimise Disney's profit
  • Interacting with & gaining support from Disney's global team
  • Bringing in new Disney partners
Travel Requirements: 
Please only apply if you are able to travel as the Retail Director will, in an average month, spend half his \ her time in Johannesburg and the other half in Cape Town.

Desired Skills and Experience

Disney sells most of its products through approved licensees or distributors who list their products with Retailers, amongst others. Disney also operates across a myriad of categories. Hence the role of Retail Director is both exciting and senior. 

The role is best suited to executives with: 
  • A business degree or equivalent; ideally a Post grad as well
  • roles held ideally across Buying, Selling and Marketing consumer products
  • A Minimum of 12 or more years’ experience
Candidates who can offer the following would succeed in the role: 
  • Proven P&L leadership
  • Proven success as a multi-category leader within a retail or global FMCG company
  • Experience developing & executing joint business plans
  • Strong sales skills 
  • Established & respected customer & industry relationships
  • Experience \ understanding of operating in a matrix business model
  • Consumer, shopper & sub Saharan retail knowledge
In terms of personality:  the role requires someone who champions change, builds relationships, is a strong leader and has an adaptive communication style

This role is suitable to: executives who currently hold positions like Sales Director, Marketing Director (with Sales experience), Merchandise Director, Head of Buying, Trading Director, Divisional Product Head or Retail Management roles.
