UbuntuNet Alliance plans, builds and operates UbuntuNet, the regional research and education internet backbone network for Eastern and Southern Africa, The Alliance is registered as a Trust in Malawi an d runs as an association of National Research and Education Networks (NRENs) in the region, Currently the Alliance has 15 NREN Members across the region, but also welcomes not-for-profit transnational research and education organization 

The Alliance implement special projects that are externally funded and as of now is partner in 3 European Union Horizon 2020 projects 

MAGIC – Middle for collaborative Applications and Global virtual Communities (www.magic-project.eu)
TANDEM – TransAfrican Network Development (ww.tandem-wacren.eu)
Sci-GaIA – Synergising Scientific through Science Gateway and e-Infrastructures in Africa (www.sci-gaia.eu)

All the 3 projects are focusing on engaging user communities and their applications that will run on data networks and in the case of our region, the UbuntuNet network 

The alliance is seeking to engage the services of a Project Assistant to be based at the Secretariat at Onions Office Complex in Lilongwe, The Projects Assistant, reporting to the Special Projects Coordinator, will provide support in the implementation of special projects that the Alliance is involved in 

Assist in implementation of activities, monitoring and reporting of special projects and grants, Assist in initiation and implementation of initiatives related to support for e-Infrastructure applications for NRENs and Communities of practice (CoPs), Assist in identification and supporting Communities of Practice (CoPs), Assist in development, operation and maintenance of UbuntuNet Alliance online services including web portals, Authentication and Authorisation Infrastructure (AAI), Science gateways, cloud infrastructure, web conferencing etc, Serving as a member of the UbuntuNet Alliance team and performing other related duties as may be required by the CEO

A Masters Degree in Computer Science or Information Technology or a good Bachelors, Proven skills in Java programming, web application development (PHP, HTML, Java server pages, XML, Application Server, servlets,); basic Unix shell (VPN, SSH, bash scripting); and basic database management (in particular MySQL); Dynamism, creativity, attention to details, and excellent repot writing and communications skills, Ability to plan and organize work efficiently with particular ability to follow-through and meet deadlines effectively, Ability to work on several projects at the same time, maintain effective performance under pressure, Ability to manage relationships and expectations in an international environment 

Fixed contract 1 yr and renewable
